How to start selling internationally?
It’s important to keep growing in the world of Business. Every year, about a 10,000 odd brands emerge in the same market as yours. And x100 if you’re considering the International market. Yet, easing the borders we’re conditioned to build in our minds and considering selling internationally seems intimidating to even think about.
Each time you entertain this thought, “I guess it’s too early” is what follows. And somehow, your brilliant brain comes up with 10,000 more unreasonable reasons backing that statement.
It’s time to break this pattern. There’s never going to be a right time and we know that. Numbers talk. It’s the only way you can predict the future of your Business. If your target profit has been achieved or even better, exceeded, then without further ado, dive right into this blog that talks about all the works that go into taking your business on the International pedestal.
Choose your Cluster and Research
The worst mistake you could make is to target the whole world altogether. You must understand that every culture is different and what will work in one country won’t work in another. Example- A low cut Boho dress may work in the US as it’s the new “in” in their market but it most definitely won’t work in South Korea as they often frown upon low cut and as of today, Layering is the current trend there.
Rather than making one strategy to target multiple countries, concentrate on one country, research their trends, their culture, the rules and regulations of exporting there and then come up with strategies to target the country of your choice.
Is your website ready to take the International plunge?
Let’s say you decided to go with the US market. What all changes will you have to make on your website?
- Language – Language won’t be an issue if yours is in English but it will be if you’re targeting other markets in the future. You can add multiple languages option as a filter, just in case. It’s easily accessible.
- Currency – Since you’re now catering to an additional country, you will have to add their currency along with your home country’s. Your customers can easily convert the product price into their local currencies when you give them the option. A simple Google search can offer you multiple extension options for currency converters.
- Payment gateway – Gateways like PayPal and Stripe make it incredibly easy for Indian merchants to do business in International waters. They accept international currency, convert them and send it to your account as and when requested.
- Shipping – You will have to tie up with courier companies, preferably the ones that work in both yours as well as other countries to avoid confusion, for International shipments. Make sure your International customers are aware that it might take up considerable time to reach them as International shipping is something that cannot be controlled.
What’s stopping you from considering eCommerce?
E-commerce came into our lives as a blessing. For sellers, a whole new gateway opened that enabled them to reach their customers more efficiently. It’s, indeed, a great opportunity to attract the international crowd, as well. On an e-commerce store, you are on par with all the other brands that exist there, including high-end brands. You are seen as nothing less than any other brand. It’s easier to target people on e-commerce stores since you won’t have to spend time in strategizing, investing in marketing, availing discounts, etc. E-commerce stores like SuprGrow, Amazon, Etsy see a high number of footfalls per day and the chances of them coming across you on these sites compared to coming across your website separately are much higher. Customer conversion is easy and you won’t have to take a lot of efforts either.
Most companies use eCommerce as their first peddle to grow into international markets. When that step is successful, they concentrate on converting users into loyal customers and then redirect the traffic to their website and of course, in that way, work on making their website more inclusive and functional.
The thought of your product selling internationally is, more often than not, worrying, esp. if your products are more culturally concentrated. But that also gives you an amazing opportunity to market your culture magnificently. Told you, there’s a silver lining to everything!
